Markdown Tables Formatting Cheatsheet: Syntax, Alignment, and Cell Escaping

Master GitHub Flavored Markdown table syntax. Learn column alignment colons (:---:, :---, ---:), multiline cell hacks, and pipe escaping.

Direct Summary (TL;DR)

Markdown tables rely on pipe characters (|) to separate columns and hyphens (---) on the delimiter row. Colon placement determines column alignment: :--- for left-aligned, :---: for centered, and ---: for right-aligned. Literal pipe characters inside table cells must be escaped with a backslash (\|) or wrapped in inline code spans (`|`).

Markdown Tables Formatting Cheatsheet: Syntax, Alignment, and Cell Escaping — Technical Summary
Alignment TypeDelimiter SyntaxVisual Alignment Result
Left Aligned (Default)| :--- | or | --- |Text aligns to the left boundary of the column
Center Aligned| :---: |Content centers horizontally between column edges
Right Aligned| ---: |Ideal for financial figures, numbers, and dates
Escaped Pipe Character| \| or `\|` |Renders a literal vertical pipe without splitting columns

The Core Grammar of GFM Tables

Standard CommonMark does not include native table grammar. Tables were standardized as part of **GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM)** and have since been adopted by platforms like GitLab, Slack, Notion, and Discord.

A standard table requires three elements: 1. A **header row** with column titles separated by pipes. 2. A **delimiter row** composed of hyphens and optional colons. 3. One or more **data rows**.

markdown
| Method | Endpoint | Description | Status Code |
| :--- | :--- | :---: | ---: |
| GET | /api/users | Fetch user list | 200 |
| POST | /api/users | Create new user account | 201 |
| DELETE | /api/users/:id | Remove user record | 204 |

Escaping Pipes and Special Characters Because the pipe character `|` serves as the column delimiter, including a literal pipe inside cell text will split your column unless properly handled: - **Inside plain text:** Use a backslash escape: `\|` - **Inside an inline code block:** Wrap the code in backticks: ` `a | b` `

Multiline Content in Cells GFM tables do not support native multiline paragraphs or nested blockquotes within a single cell.

For line breaks inside a cell, use the HTML break tag: ```markdown | Feature | Details | | :--- | :--- | | Authentication | OAuth 2.0 supported<br>JWT session tokens<br>SAML 2.0 Enterprise | ```

Frequently Asked Questions

Do table pipes have to align vertically in the raw text?

No. Markdown parsers do not require visually padded pipes; |a|b| and | a | b | produce identical HTML. However, monospaced padding improves raw source readability.

Can I combine cells horizontally or vertically (colspan / rowspan)?

Standard Markdown tables do not support colspan or rowspan. If your layout requires merged cells, embed an HTML <table> tag with <td> attributes.
